When a man loses hair on the top of the head he generally still has good growth at the posterior section. The standard method of hair follicle removal is to cut a thin strip of the scalp out with the associated hair follicles intact. A team of medical assistants will then remove the individual hair shaft along with all the support elements including the sebaceous glands and the surrounding adventitial sheath along with the supporting nervous system and vascular system components. During this time the cosmetic surgeon will be mapping out on the patient’s head where to place the individual hairs and in what direction to insert them. It is important that the hairs grow in the same direction as the surrounding hair.

The method of hair transplantation most effective for women is the follicular unit extraction method. The problem with a standard hair transplant for women is that women do not have a good donation area so body hairs are often times uses. The FUE hair transplantation procedure actually allows for the removal of individual body hairs to be placed into the thinning area. This hair works very good as a filler but not so good at the hair line.
