Hair Transplant For Women

Women now have another option when dealing with the embarrassment of female pattern baldness and the affects of the balding which it causes. Historically, about the only hope for a woman with hair loss was to buy a wig and be accepting of the fact that she just would not be able to do physical or nature based activities any more. This has changed now that hair transplants for women have been perfected.

Hair implants have been around for 50 years but they were never very effective for women because of the way a woman loses her hair. When men experience balding it is usually on the top front of the head and on the crown. Sometimes the entire top of the head will experience hair loss with only a fringe around the sides and hair good growth remaining at the back. The key to the hair implants for men was to use this area at the back of the head as a donor area. Even when men would be completely bald on top they usually would show continued hair coverage on this posterior area of the scalp.

This hair growth allowed for removal of part of the scalp from which the hair follicle units could be extracted and then inserted into the bald area. This was not possible with a female hair transplant because a woman usually would experience hair thinning over her entire head along with the bald patches caused by the pattern baldness. With men the suture line required to sew up the area the scalp was removed from could easily be covered by the resulting hair growth of the surrounding area. When trying to use this method for hair transplants women this was not possible because the remaining hair was so thin it would not cover up the line. Also, it was not practical to remove a section of scalp because it would not contain enough hair units to do the job.

About ten years ago a new hair transplant for women procedure was developed which did away with the scalp removal step. This new method used hairs from all over the scalp and even other parts of the body in order to fill in the bald spot. This is accomplished with the method known as Follicular Unit Extraction.

The FUE method is revolutionary in that it removes the hair units directly from the skin instead of having the need to remove any dermal material. A small medical device is used to remove the individual hair units which will be implanted into the bald area. This results in a very small wound which looks like a pin prick and is healed up within a few days. Now the surgeon can spread out the removal of hair from all over the scalp and can also use hair from other areas of the body as filler. Generally, hair from the scalp is used for the hair line as it is most noticeable. Hair from other body areas is then used to intermix with scalp hair in the center parts of the bald areas.

This new method for hair transplant women has opened up a way for hair restoration that will last a life time and appears very natural. The hair implants will start to grow within a few weeks and can then be styled just like the hair that originally grew where the bald spot developed. If you suffer from female pattern baldness this can be a very good way to stop the hair loss and get back the head of hair you used to have.
