Hair implants are by far the absolute best method for treating hair loss caused by male pattern baldness. By definition, the hair loss associated with this condition is found in only certain areas of the scalp. This leaves other areas with good hair growth which can be transplanted into the balding area. Once transplanted, the hair will continue to grow for years just like you natural hair did before it was rendered useless by the pattern baldness.
There are several types of hair implants depending on which size grafts you are interested in. Generally speaking, the larger the graft unit the lower the cost but also the less acceptable the results are. It is a balancing act between hair implant cost and the resulting head of hair from the hair implantation surgery.
The larger grafts are called strip grafts. With this method a strip of scalp from the donation area is cut out and inserted into a slice in the bald area of the scalp. The hairs are naturally all in a line so as you can imagine this is very noticeable. This is the cheapest method but it is very noticeable. The next cheapest method is known as the plug graft. This is a round plug of scalp with about ten hairs that is removed from the donor area and the inserted in the bald spot. These again are very noticeable.
The first technique that is really not very noticeable as far as being the results of a hair implantation surgery is the mini-graft. This is a group of about six hairs that are removed with the surrounding tissue and scalp. When inserted into the bald area they tend to be noticeable from up close but look very good when viewed from a medium distance like about ten feet. If you want a good job and are on a budget these are the types of grafts to get.
The absolute best surgical procedure involves using micro-grafts. These are tiny hair transplants that are composed of between one and three hair follicles which is how hair grows naturally. These are unnoticeable even under close inspection. This surgery takes longer and requires more skill so it is more expensive but it is well worth it if you want results that look absolutely natural.
For the best method you can expect to pay about $6 to $7 per graft. You may need from several hundred to a few thousand units so the cost can be substantial but it is very much worth it for the results you get.
