Hair Implant Surgery Cost

The biggest question to ask before deciding to have hair implant surgery is why it is necessary in the first place. If you are balding, why don’t you just put some hair loss remedy on your head and call it good. Well I’ll tell you why, once the hair has fallen out there is very little chance that you will get those hair follicles to start growing hair again. You can spend all the money you want on hair loss solutions but the fact is the hair is not coming back. That is why the hair implant surgery cost is such a good deal, it is the only thing that works.

The hair transplant surgery cost is based on a few factors but let’s first see why it is necessary to treat you baldness with surgery. The majority of men who have hair loss, in fact almost 100%, do so because of the genetic, medical condition called androgenic alopecia. This is fairly common for both men and women with about 40% of the people reporting early hair loss being women. There is really quite a market for hair implants for women.

When a man or woman suffers this form of alopecia the cause is very easy to spot. There is a metabolite of the male sex hormone testosterone that is formed by an enzyme called 5alpha-reductase. The result is dihydrotestosterone or DHT. The DHT will actually bond to the hair follicles (also called hair roots by layman) which causes the hair to stop its normal growth frequency. As the growth stages shorten the hair tends to get smaller and smaller in cross section eventually turning wispy and then breaking off and falling out. At this point the hair follicle is no longer capable of supporting hair growth no matter what you do. The only alternative is to replace the hair follicles with ones from another section of scalp where they are still healthy.

Generally, for men, this section is the posterior area of the scalp. Men almost never lose their hair at this spot. Part of the hair transplant surgery cost is based on how thick this hair growth is and thus how easy it is to harvest donor hair.

When calculating the hair implant cost you have to look at how big an area needs to be treated and the per graft charge. It is only reasonable to understand that the cost of hair implant surgery is going to be more if you have large bald spot than someone with just a small area of hair loss. The second determiner is the per graft cost. In the US this runs about $3 to $7 per graft depending on the hair clinic and where it is located. A good surgeon can lay the hair follicles in such a way that they not a lot of grafts are needed.

You really shouldn’t let the hair implant surgery cost scare you because it truly is the only method to treat baldness that is almost 100% successful.
